Hey, Luc!

Subject: LL-L "Names"

Hi:
Your note refers;
'Along the Belgian coast, there's a number of places that seem to share the
"hide" of "Richel-hide" in their names: Koksijde, Raversijde, Lombardsijde.
"Hide" would be a hypercorrection of "ie, ee" = "water". Same root is
visible in "Chelsea".'

I rather think that on Heather's side of the Channel the term 'hide' is from
an Anglo-Saxon subdivision of land, the smallest unit held in reckoning for
food-rent (tax assessment). I wouldn't expect to find it in the actual
Danelaw for that reason.

Keep this pot simmering, hey! 'Flemings' had a lot more to do with the
economies & inevitably the history of Western Europe than they are given
credit for.

Yrs with Great Interest,
Mark.
