Dank Jouw, Hanne, Heinrich un' Joachim,

foyr Jouwn Hölp bii "vernielen/verneelen".

(English summary below)

Joachim:

ik glöif, de ursprunk van ostfreesk »verneelen” geyt uut dem indrag in
Klöntrups westfœlsk wördebouk for »verniil(e)n” hervor:
"vernilen: gänzlich vernichten, a n n i h i l a r e ."
Auk wan dat nin etymologisk wördebouk is, sluute ik uut dem indrag, dat
Klöntrup (ümme 1800) 'verniiln' up de latiinske wuerdel
'nihil' = niks, 'nihilare' = tonichte maaken
torügföört hadde.
Un dat sçint mi auk krass korrekt!

Dat mit "annihilare" kunn woll hen-kaomen. Man - wo is' dat her-kaomen ;-)?
Mit de Franken uut dat Franzöös'sche, as
"annihiler"? Sücht maist sou uut, un' ouk, wat dat schiints meyhr inne West
van 't Neddersassische/Nedersaksische Spraok-Gebiet tou finnen is, kunn woll
'n Henwiis ween.

(English summary):

Thanks to Hannelore, Heinrich and Joachim for their help to find out the
roots of the LS-word "vernielen/verneelen", which means "to destroy".

Joachim wrote, that it could be a descendant of Latin "annihilare" with the
same meaning. I wonder how this came into LS, and I guess that it made its
early way via French "annihiler", brought by the Franks into the western
regions of the Low Saxon areas.

Allerbest!
