Hi all,

Heather, your query relating to *vinestall* surely elicited many responses!

I suspect the ‘vine’ part refers to any kind of woody creeper that

could have been burnt as fuel to dry the salt brine, such as ivy,

briars, brambles, etc.

In Afrikaans, ‘stall’ relates to many varied forms:

-opstal (house on a Boer farm)

-stal (stable)

-installasie (set up ) as in E. installation

-stellasie (structure above ground)

-verstel (to reset)

-stalletjie (kiosk)

Regards,

Elsie Zinsser
