Even the Scots do not realise that chips originated in Scotland.
After Sir Walter Raleigh brought the potato to England's shores Southern
barbarians ate them raw and therefore rejected them
They therefore sold all their stockpile to Scotland where my ingenious
ancestors quickly found them to be delicious when cut into small sticks and
deep fried in lard. The English would not reveal the source and as the
things soon went off the Scots crammed the raw potato sticks into brick
shaped moulds and froze them for future use. These could be stockpiled for
many years and used when
there was a dearth of potatoes coming from England. When that happened the
contents of some moulds were defrosted and the sticks deep fried when it was
discovered that those thus preserved had superior flavour and crispness to
the fresh variety.
There Oh Best Beloved you have the origin of the laudatiory phrase "A chip
oif the old block".
 Best Regards
