Ek herhinner my aan 'n Afrikaanse vers uit die einste sjentie:

I beg leave to agree with Vlad, who holds that in the times when
*real*shanties were sung,
*keine* Seefahrt was either 'lustig' or 'schön'. I mean it.



But still, Vlad they sang. Even on hard ships they sang. R.H. Dana Jr. makes
that point, writing in 'Three years before the mast', having left his
university studies for his lungs' sake & signed articles (bad luck) as an
ordinary seaman on the 'Pilgrim', an unhappy ship with a marginally endowed
Master. They sang & they worked their way around the Horn to California,
changed ships but alas not the captain & sailed back, & rounding the Horn
again, while the 'Old Man' consoled a seriously worried passenger (the only
one), saying, "That sounds like a lively crew. They'll have their song so
long as there's enough left for a chorus."



Dana is an antidote to Joseph Conrad, with a good view of the pinched
underbelly of a mossback's life at sea, & no illusions to cherish or to
foster. Vlad, bear in mind a working man's life on land was not much better,
& in some cases a whole lot worse. The Sea got some of the best of men from
all walks of life, & some of the worst, & unlike life on land they chose it
(unless a crimp got them). Also, some periods in the History of Sail, some
ships & some ship-masters were better than others. I guess, given a choice,
I'd rather go to sea than down a mine or man a cotton-jenny, if I could
choose my berth, & speaking with the hindsight of many (including Slocum,
Villiers, Royce & Newby) I'd rather sail with a German line or Finnish of
the late Nineteenth Century or early Twentieth than any other, & I'd choose
any other ship before a Limey, unless it were a Bluenose Yankee.
Imaginative? They were certainly imaginative. Take the Seeadler as a fine &
not a rare example. & You, Sir, are another example of vindingrykheid, if I
have picked up anything from you.

Somebody made a comment about tempo of shanties. There are no rules here.
Different tasks called for different tempi, manning the capstan or the
sweeps, hauling sheets, swabbing decks or holystoning them. There were clean
verses for those manning packets with passengers, but they all knew the
dirty lyrics too.



And sailors are not alone. In my time soldiering, some of the most testing
training I ever did was softened by song. & contrary to the popular record
(as I have heard it) we were not all jack-booted Afrikaners with foreheads
villeinously low. Lili Marlene was a good one, very popular but it has to
be sung in German. Another good one was the very shanty you opened with,
including these memorable lines:



De kamp die se versperrings

is gaandeweg verby,

want die hoere met hul moters

het die drade platgery.

Flagg un daar wull ook nüms wat van weten. De Düütschen wassen
in jümeer "Einheitstaumel". So hebbt wi dat sünner de Medien maakt,
as een Akschoongrupp in de Maneer van de "Graswurzel", as dat upp Dütsch
heet.
Dat Internett geev dat ook noch neet as hüüt.
Wi hebbt us welke Flaggen maakt un sünd daarmet lostrocken.
Wi sünd in'n Kroog ween, bi Football, upp Middsümmerfier, upp Reis, upp
Festivals.
Ik heff in'nt Jaar 2000 upp de alternative "Expo von unten" in Hannover
dat neddersassisch Noordland präsenteert met us Flagg.

Ik mag dat Sassenpeer wull lieden. Et is egens een groot un stolt Teken.
Man ik heff dree Grünn, dat Hiesken neet binnen een Flagg to maken:

1. Schall dat denn een witt of een swatt Peer wesen?
Dat swatte Peer is een haidnisch Teken, sachs een beten lieksas
Woden sien Peer. Dat witte Peer stait för dat Christendom,
daar heff ik egens nix gegen, man dat stait ook för Karl as Winner över
Widukind,
un daar heff ik nu doch wat gegen.

2. Dat tweete heff ik al seggt: Dat Sassenpeer is een "Tribal".
Dat stait för een ethnisch Grupp. Dat is een grood Symbol.
Man Oostfresen sünd keen Sassen, un jümeer Sassisch is een Mix
van Sassisch, een beetjen Freesk un ne Masse nederlannsche Wörr.
It's real lowland language. Lüüd in Meckelborg sünd wull ook
egens keen Sassen. För mi is dat plattdüütsche Land,
dat Sassenland, een grood Kulturregioon.

3. Dat wichtigste is avers: Dat Peer is för min Fölen veel to
folkloristisch bruukt. Sien Knööv is verlüstig gaan.
Un wenn ik een Schriven van een Amt kreeg, is dat een hochdütschen Breev

Dat is een Ünnerscheed. Ik simleer: Wi maakt to us Flagg ook een "Wappen"
met
Sassenpeer un Hansekogge. Dat Sassenpeer stait för Stammesstolt un de Kogge
för Werldenwietsicht.
Flagg un Wappen sünd twee Saken.

As ik al seggt heff: Dat Krüüz stait neet allen för Skandinvaien.
Dat Krüüz stait för den Noorn. England hett ook een Krüüz.
De Grupp van Auerk hett een Krüüz för Freesland vörslaan.
Un nu kiek sik een de Flagg van den freesken Rat an:
Dat is allns döreenanner, liek so as seggt is: To veel Symbolen sind neet

Ik meen de Fresen hebbt een grood Schangs verdoon.

Met de Klören för dat Land, grön, geel un blau hebbt
wi wat funnen, wat tominnst älkeen verstaan kann.

een Deel van Noorn.
Bi de Ideen för een intersaks Flagg van de nedersaks Wikipedia
wassen ook meerst Krüüze bi. Wunnert mi, dat dat bet nu keen uppfullen is.
Daran kannst du seen: Vör veele Lüüd is dat Krüüz typisk för'n Noorden.
Of düsse Flagg denn Noordlandflagg, Moinflagg, Plattdüütsch Flagg or
Nige Sassische Flagg nöömt warrd, is för mi neet dat wichtigste.
De Farven sünd good un dat Krüüz egens ook.
