Yes, you are absolutely right. I hadn't thought of that yet. However,
thinking about it now that you mentioned it, wouldn't that also be a problem
for existing tri-colour flags where the bands are vertical? Or just about
any flag that isn't symmetrical.

There are different ways to handle this problem:
There are even examples of flags where the reverse side has different
symbols on it (like the flag of Oregon
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Oregon><http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Oregon>
).

Not really. The convention with any flag is that the symbol or image is in
the same place relative to the flagpole, called the "hoist". For example,
whichever way you look at the USA flag, the blue quarter ("canton") with the
stars is always at the top, next to the hoist. If the trailing edge ("fly")
is on the right, thats where the stripes are, but from the other side
they'll be on the left. They are still in the fly.

Animals, such as Sri Lanka's lion or the Welsh dragon, should always have
their heads nearest the hoist, otherwise they are running away. Same with
vertical tricoleurs like France, Belgium or Italy: the order of colours is
always hoist-middle-fly, whichever way round the flag happens to be
flapping.

But the convention we have come to accept with maps is that west is on the
left, east is one the right. If (for example) the USA had a map on it's
flag, when the wind was blowing the other way, Boston would be on the west
coast and Seattle would be on the east. Might do them good to get a
different view, but it wouldn't be right.

The normal convention for printing flags in books is hoist to the left, fly
to the right. If the picture doesn't actually show a flagpole, that's what
we assume. Scandinavian crosses like Denmark's are offset to the left in
such pictures only because the hoist is assumed to be on the left. If you
actually draw the pole, you could do it either way.

" This happened with the map of the EU (on a coin), and when it comes to the
logo of the 2012 London Olympics, the less said the better!"

That coin map was priceless. For the uninitiated, I recommend looking at a
typical map of Finland and the Scandinavian peninsula, and letting your
imagination run wild. Except for the coin, you didn't need much imagination!
