I did mean "Peter Murphy", the Bauhaus-singer. Saw him crawling out of a
coffin a couple of years ago during a gig in Belgium (Lokeren). He was
wearing a long black cape...I couldn't discern if he had his fangs on, but
he kept the cape on for quite a while. Which isn't that odd for a godfather,
is it?

Unless you can find proof that vampire bats are particularly fond of the
Lowlands, I'd suggest we continue this banter on Facebook...Ron suddenly
showed up on my radar ;=)

Reminds me btw, of a bat I had in my sleeping room last year...getting it
out was sooo difficult! I had opened all the windows, turned the lights on
and off, made all kinds of noises...even briefly thought of playing a
Throbbing Gristle tune that supposedly contains infrasonic vibrations...no
use of course, Bose 901 doesn't go that low. I left the room, keeping an eye
on it from the hallway...quite often the bat flew right at an open window,
only deciding the very last moment to make a sharp turn and stay inside.
Decided to leave the scene, and returned after an hour...it was gone. Maybe
it did sense my presence in a way? ;=)

Now there I have the connection with your uncanny story in the crypt about
the "Ferranti Spectre"...Ron has left the building again ;=)

That brings me to the more general subject of "guardian angels". Where
there's ghosts, there are also often spirits offering protection. It's only
a short hop from "genius" to "genie" to an Arabic Djinn جني.
Djinns are now considered more evil and playful by nature, but in
pre-islamic days the Ginnaye were quite like their Roman counterparts Genius
(the divine, transcendental part of every human being) and goddess Juno (aka
Lucina ~ bringer of light).

China has Zhong Kui, 鍾馗, notorious catcher of meanies and commander of 80
000 demons (compare with Lucifer, both light-bearer and fallen angel).

I have a huge painting of him hanging here...similar to this one, but even
more fearful:

Now I wonder of course if we have homegrown truly Lowlandic "protective
spirits" too?

This could all be related to the so called "third man experience". A
phenomenon that mountaineers often describe as an intervening "person" to
whom they can talk in very extreme circumstances and who lends psychological
support. There's a try at a scientific explanation here:

(inbuilt switch triggering the temporo-parietal junction of our brains)

Finally...the flight of a bat is interesting...according to popular Chinese
belief, evil spirits are stupid and predicatable, they always move along
straight lines. That's why inside a compound, often a wall is erected, right
behind the entrance gate. This wall protects the yard from evil spirits,
'cause they bump right against it and aren't clever enough to make a bypass
;=)

Mmm...guess this only happens when one is working too long on a Mac...the
genie-effect ;=)

Kind greetings,

Luc Hellinckx, Halle, Belgium
