Subject: Fwd: Negerhollands - an extinct Lowlands creole in the Caribbean



You might be interested in an article I wrote recently on
Negerhollands for the blog of Denmark's Language Museum,
http://sprogmuseet.dk/kreolsprog/negerhollands/.

Negerhollands was a Zeeuws-based creole, for some 250 years spoken
exclusively on the Danish Virgin Islands, by African slaves and
European masters alike. The language was replaced by (creole) English
by the late 1800s and the Last Speaker, Alice Stevens, died in 1987.
It was the first creole language to be called so, it was the first
creole to have a grammar published (1770) and an unusually large
volume of – mainly, but not only religious – texts in Negerhollands
have survived.

Of course the article is in Danish, the language angels speak on
Sundays, but automatic translation by Google or rule-based
Gramtrans.com will give others a good idea of the contents, too :-)
