Subject: LL-L "Etymology" 2010.09.09 (02) [EN]



The Oxford Dictionary says it first apperas in Middle English, from Old
Norse *drit*, as you say. In this early form it had the specific meaning of
"excrement". Old English used *fylth* ("filth"), related to "foul" and I
assume to Dutch *vuilte*?
