When I was a kid, speaking about a satchel, we always used the term "kabas"
(Ranzen (G), also ransel in some Dutch dialects)



kabas < cabas (Occitan) < capax (Latin ~ capere, to contain)



Some also called it their "calepin" (French pronunciation) < Ambrogio
Calepino, Italian lexicographer, born 1435.
