Hello Lowlanders,

Henriy Pijffers wrote (LL-L 21. February 2011-Volume 01):

Someone asked why the English words "laughter" and "daughter" are
pronounced so differently. I've already found that the former comes
straight from Middle English, via Old English "hleahtor", and
the latter from Middle English "doughter", from Old English
"dohtor".

I have read in the dictionary ONLINE ETYMOLOGY DICTIONARY:

*laughter
*O.E./Old English *hleahtor*, from P.Gmc. **hlahtraz *(cf. O.N./ Old Norse *
hlatr*, Ger. *Gelächter)*; see *laugh.

**daughter
*O.E. *dohtor*, from P.Gmc. **dochter*, earler **dhukter *(ef. O.S. *dohtar*,
O.N. *dottir, *O.Fris., Du. *dochter,
*Goth. *dauhtar*), from PIE **dhugheter *(cf. Skt. *duhitar-*, Avestan *
dugeda-*, Armenian *dustr*, O.C.S. *dušti*,
Lith. *dukte*, Gk. *thygater*). The common IE word, lost in Celtic and Latin
(L. *filia *"daughter" is fem. of *filius
*"son"). The modern spelling evolved 16c. in southern England. *Daughter-in-law
*is attested from late 14c.

I think, we must accept the different discussion. (Ick wull beseggen, wi
möten den'n ünnerscheidlichen Sound akzeptieren.)

Regards.

Hanne

P.S.: Dit wier oewer ne Prozedur, tweimal is de Bidrag in de Binsen gahn
(abgestürzt).
