R. Hondshoven, *Woordenboek van het Melkwezers: Een Getelands Dialect: met
Uitgebreid Taalkundig Supplement*, (self-published?): 2003, hardcover book
(259 pp.) with accompanying audio CD.



The value of this work by Roger Hondshoven (rhondshoven at yahoo.com,
roger.hondshoven at telenet.be), a long-time member of Lowlands-L, can not be
overstated. If it is not the only description of a Geteland dialect it
surely is the most thorough, its scope by far surpassing that of a mere
dictionary.



Melkwezer (locally called *Wezeren*) is a town in Flemish Brabant, Belgium,
and is situated east of Antwerp. Its indigenous language variety is a member
of the Low Frankish Geteland dialect group, which is transitional between
Brabantish and Limburgish.



The dictionary uses Standard Dutch glosses and is richly annotated.
Particularly welcome and useful is the addition of IPA transcriptions to all
entries. A reverse dictionary part (*locatiewijzer*) refers to more
elaborate entries in the first part.



This is followed by a thorough, splendidly presented synchronic as well as
diachronic language description.



The accompanying audio CD is more than a cherry on top. It offers well over
one hour of various people’s contributions in and about the dialect.



In my opinion, this work is a must-have in the library of anyone seriously
interested in Low Frankish, Low German and Germanic language diversity.
