This is almost certainly from Old Norse, like a lot of maritime vocabulary
in Irish.

Malayalam for Reef Cod / *Epinephelus tauvina* (Atlantic cod of course does
not make it to these waters) is *(Panni) Kalawa/Kalava*... as I am no expert
on Dravidian etymologies (especially fish names), I won't testify to it, but
it seems remotely possible, given the geographic location of Kerala relative
to (once Portuguese) Goa, and a metathesis slightly more convoluted than the
bacalau>kabelau, that Kalava could ALSO belong to this group of words... and
if so, then also Malay Kerapu, Tagalog Kalapo, Ilokano Kurapo (all with
syllable order 231) and Aceh Baraka (syllable order 132) as well?

Der ursprung ist dunkel, der name ist bei den verschiedenen seefahrenden
völkern in der hauptsache derselbe, nur die Engländer nennen ihn cod,
codfish; *wir haben ihn von den Holländern, nnl. kabeljaauw, früher**kabbeljau
* f., bei Kilian kabeliau, kableau; vergl. nl. bakkeljauw m. eine art
ungetrockneter stockfische (vgl. Diez 583), und kablen, das auf den ursprung
leiten könnte. Wie bei andern waarennamen, wird auch hier der sing. als
collectiv für die menge gesetzt, sechs tonnen kabliau.
