re -s ending on verbs

Here in Worcester city it is usual to hear (especially) children
saying " I goes ... I eats.... I says

I used to make a point of drawing attention to it when teaching German
here. "In English you only have one ending in the present tense - an
's' on 3rd person singular. You can't say for example "I goes"  Whoops!
Oh yes you can! Here in the city you do it all the time, don't you? "
It was amazing how little aware the children were of what they were
saying and that it differed from the norm heard on TV and radio or read
in books and newspapers.

Sorry if the subject has moved on, but I'm just picking up 64 emails
after a long Bank Holiday weekend spent handing out commemorative mugs
to the children of our village and holding a Royal Memorabilia
Exhibition which included a slipper thrown at a bride in 1889 by the
then Prince of Wales ( apparently custom in those days) and a Silver
Jubilee milk bottle top saved since 1977 !
