Note that a couple of centuries later, Saxons (and Danes) will in turn take
the lead in the Wendish Crusade, trying to convert the Polabian Slavs:

There had been clashes between Saxons/Danes and Balts/Slavs prior to this
Crusade, but what was new in the 12th century was that these conflicts were
