It was one of the Roman historians (I forget which one) talking about
the Celts who stated that what they feared most was that the sky might
fall on their heads.

It is a fascinating statement the more you think about it; what had
happened within human /celtic memory to believe that the sky could fall
in! Just like those few lines in the Muspilli

(not Platt I know but forgive me)

Which is very similar in feeling to some lines in a early Welsh poem
Cad Goddeu   ( The battle of the trees )

There shall be a black darkness
There shall be a shaking of the mountain
There shall be a purifying furnace
There shall be first a great wave                      (Robert Graves
translation)

I suppose it is only to be expected that human history would have
witnessed some kind of cataclysm that appeared like the 'end of the
world'; any ideas what?

Dat is appeldwalschen/appeldwatschen (albern, töricht) Kram.

*Häben *Belege 1. aus dem Volksmund: 'lev wohl, bett dat de Heben sackt'
(d.h. solange die Erde besteht;  Abschiedsgruß* *1732* siehe *Nd.Kbl.
