Beste Laaglanders,

Van de week is in de Lage Landen een einde gekomen aan een ongeveer
duizendjarig stuk geschiedenis: In Kortrijk stierf het allerlaatste
begijntje van de wereld: Juffrouw Marcella Pattyn,92 jaar. Hier is
duidelijk een tijdperk afgesloten. Hadden de begijntjes de laatste eeuwen
een wat ouderwets imago,dan was de beginperiode toch anders. Het was voor
vrouwen de enige manier om individueel te leven. In die tijd moest een
vrouw trouwen of in het klooster gaan. Een begijn leefde afzonderlijk in
haar eigen huis, in een afgeschermde omgeving. 's Avonds gingen de deuren
dicht. Als ze wilden konden ze altijd vertrekken. Ze moesten alleen beloven
kuis te leven. De Rooms-katholieke kerk vond het maar niks en wilde het
zelfs verbieden als ketters. Toch bleef het honderden jaren bestaan, tot
nu... Het laatste grote begijnhof (een echt dorp) werd gebouwd in Gent in
de 19de eeuw. Nu heeft Gent nog 3 begijnhoven om te bezoeken.
Onze bekendst begijn was waarschijnlijk Hadewijch. Voor meer geschiedenis:

Het laatste begijntje lag van de week opgebaard in de kapel van haar
begijnhof te Kortrijk.Ik denk dat het vandaag haar begrafenis is.
PS: mannelijke begijnen heten begarden. Die zijn allang verdwenen.
De begijnhoven zijn in onze steden de mooiste plaatsen om te bezoeken!

This week came to an end a millennial piece of history in the Low Countries: In
Kortrijk died the last beguine of the world: Miss Marcella Pattyn, 92 years. An
era has clearly ended. Had the Beguines in the last centuries anold-fashioned
image,  the beginning was different. It was the only way for women to live
their live individually. At that time a woman had to marry or go into
amonastery.
A Beguine lived alone in her own house, in a protected environment. In the
evening the doors closed. If they wanted to, they could always leave.
They  only
had to promise to live chaste. The Roman Catholic Church did not like it and
even wanted to ban them  as heretics. Still they lived  like that for
centuries ... The last big beguinage (a real village) was build in Gent in
the 19th century (Gent has 3 beguinages to visit.)

Our best known beguine was probably  'Hadewijch'. For more history, see

The last week Marcella was laid out in the chapel of her begijnhof in Kortrijk.
I think her funeral is today.

PS: male 'begijnen' called 'begarden'. Those are long gone.
The beguinages in our cities are the most beautiful places to visit!
