Subject: LL-L "Etymology" 2014.05.21 (01) [EN]

from Heather Rendall heatherrendall at tiscali.co.uk

English has 'baked on' = stuck so daub would be applied to
wattle and the sun would bake it on i.e. it would dry out and stick to
the wattle. Children's faces can have a variety of food residues
'caked on' in much the same fashion /meaning

I think the connection between the two very revealing and would posit
that 'to stick' came first and then came to be applied to anything
baked/caked as the ingredients came to be stuck together .... or as
previously suggested - were cooked by being 'stuck' to the hot wall or
stone of the oven
