Archiving course at the LSA institute?

Hello OLAC-Outreachers,

While in the process of getting together a proposal for an LSA 2005
Meeting tutorial on archiving, one of the invited participants, Joan
Maling, asked me whether there were any plans for something comparable at
the LSA institute next summer in Boston.

I checked with Ivan Sag, one of the institute directors, and he told me
there was no such course--but that he would be willing to pass on some
sort of proposal to the general committee. No guarantees, of course.

Since there is a proposed Ken Hale chair in field linguistics at this
Institute, it seems like it would certainly be a good idea to put out some
sort of proposal for something like this. I checked with the EMELD folks
and they intend to have the EMELD workshop in Boston--however, they don't
have anything like this planned for then.

I'm willing to write up some proposal for an archiving course. But I
wanted to see what other people thought about this. Should we try for a
three-week course? A six-week course? Should we propose possible
instructors at this point or wait to see if the Institute contacts us?

I figure the proposal should be short (less than a page) since the
directors are, presumably, all quite busy.

I may be back in touch soon with a draft. In the meantime, I'd be curious
for others' input.

Thanks,
Jeff
