Dear Heidi, Jeff, et al.,
I wrote to Ian Maddieson, who was one of the participants at the LSA
"Acoustic Analysis" tutorial, which Heidi cited:

Here's his response.

Hi Debbie,

The audience was very gratifying considering the long hours involved
and the mainly
lecturing format did not seem to turn people off, although some
little mini-assignments
might have been a good addition. Most of the speakers had a
time-slot about the same
as a regular LSA paper, so couldn't really contemplate doing much of
that kind of thing.
The first presentation was a longer one, though, and might well have
tried to have a
bit more hands-on stuff for the participants (in practice this would
have meant something
like mini-assignments on a handout). As it was, some presenters did
ask questions of the
audience about what they were showing, but the main way that interest
was maintained
was in having changes of speaker and making sure that (most of) the
presentations were
inherently lively and interesting.

Hope these remarks help.

Ian
