Tonia Bleam
(CNRS LLF/Northwestern University) Two structures for the dative alternation
in Spanish
11:00-13:00

ABSTRACT:
In this talk I argue that the presence or absence of the dative clitic in
Spanish should be viewed as a dative alternation, where the version with
the clitic has the same underlying structure as that of the English
double
object construction (DOC). This work assumes and supports the idea that
the DOC is not derivable from the prepositional dative construction, but
rather that there are two independent underlying structures (in
particular, I adopt those proposed Harley 2000 inter alia). Support for
these ideas comes from well-known tests such as binding, interpretive
restrictions, and idiom chunks.
