salle des Actes (ENS, 45, rue d'Ulm, escalier A, 1er étage)

Une discussion des propriétés des sujets dans l'acquisition de L1 et L2

Among the topics covered, it will be discussed
how different languages appear to display preferred strategies to answer
the same question concerning the subject of the clause. The proposal that
will be elaborated on is that there are grammatical reasons for this
preference, having to do with differences in parametric choices.
Grammatically compatible, yet not preferred strategies are nevertheless
present in more limited ways in different languages in conditions where
the generally preferred strategy is not available for independent
reasons. Will be discussed: the use of Cleft sentences in French and
inversion structures; data from bilingual (adult) L2 acquisition will
play a crucial role in the argumentation which will also address general
considerations bearing on economy and parametric setting.
