Cross-linguistic studies of sign languages:  Emphasis on Asia

RESUME:
Just as it is important to consider a wide variety of spoken  languages 
in order to determine true universals, it is equally  important to look 
at a wide variety of sign languages.  Early sign  language research was 
almost exclusively on Western sign languages.   An examination of Asian 
sign languages yields many surprising  results.  Specifically, phenomena 
thought to be universal to sign  languages are not, and Asian sign 
languages use some very  interesting  grammatical devices not found in 
Western sign language
