Chronos is a series of conferences dedicated to current research on the
morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics of markers of tense, aspect and
modality. The conferences welcome presentations from scholars who approach
linguistic research from different perspectives and embrace different
theoretical frameworks.
Main Session: morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics of markers of tense,
aspect and modality.
Parasession: Endangered & less-documented languages.
Special associated Workshop: Scalar structure and event structure
The thematic parasession of Chronos 2009 will be dedicated to the
tense/aspect/modality systems of endangered and less-documented languages. Not
only do such languages often face a serious danger of rapid extinction; they
are also a relatively intact source of fecund data, which might shed some new
light on the empirical generalizations and theoretical/formal constructs
currently prevalent within the community – indeed, these have generally been
elaborated through observations bearing on a handful of well-documented
languages.
In addition to this special theme, Chronos 2009 will also include a host
workshop dedicated to the relationship between scalar structure and event
structure (co-organized by U. Paris 7 and U. Chicago): this particular
empirical field has proved very fruitful over the past few years, by nourishing
a wealth of new formal and theoretical approaches to aspectual meaning. The
Chronos 2009 host workshop will constitute a unique opportunity of bringing
together and confronting different recent approaches to the connection between
aspect and scalarity.
Submissions to the conference are not restricted to the special topics here
listed. We welcome proposals relating to any area in the linguistics of tense,
aspect and modality.

Submission guidelines:
Abstracts are invited for 20-minute presentations (plus 10 minutes for
discussion). All presentations will be delivered in French or in English.
***Preference will be given to presentations not duplicated at any major
conferences (e.g., LSA, LSRL)
Abstracts must be anonymous and written in French or in English. They should be
no longer than two pages in length using 1 inch/2.5 cm margins on all sides and
in 12pt font size (Times New Roman preferred). Any non-standard fonts should be
embedded in the PDF document. Submissions are limited to one individual and one
joint abstract per author.

Authors are asked to submit their anonymous abstracts as pdf files via the
special Chronos 9 EasyAbs submission page, hosted on the Linguist List server
(click here to access the paper submission page).
Click on the link and follow the instructions there. When submitting your
abstract, please specify whether you would like to be considered for the Main
Session, the Parasession on Endangered/Less Documented Languages, or the
Workshop on Scalar structure & Event Structure.
Please note the following: Only online PDF submissions at the site specified
above will be accepted. When you create the PDF file, please make sure to
remove any information that may lead to identify the author(s): in Acrobat, go

et la modalité

Les colloques Chronos, qui sont organisés tous les deux ans, sont consacrés aux
recherches actuelles sur la morphologie, la syntaxe, la sémantique ou la
pragmatique des temps verbaux, de l'aspect, ou de la modalité. L'objectif des
colloques Chronos est de réunir des chercheurs travaillant dans des
perspectives et des cadres théoriques différents.
Les précédentes éditions de Chronos se sont déroulées à Austin (2008), Anvers
(2006), Genève (2004), Groningue (2002), Nice (2000), Valenciennes (1998),
Bruxelles (1996) et Dunkerque (1995).
Session principale : morphologie, syntaxe, sémantique ou la pragmatique des
temps verbaux, de l'aspect, ou de la modalité.
Session parallèle : langues en danger et moins documentées.
Workshop associé : structure scalaire et structure événementielle.
La session thématique de Chronos 2009 sera consacrée aux expressions de temps,
d'aspect, et de modalité dans les langues en danger et moins documentées. Car
non seulement ces langues sont en danger d'extinction à court terme, mais elles
sont aussi une source relativement négligée de données fécondes, qui pourraient
éclairer d'un jour nouveau les généralisations empiriques et construits
théoriques/formels dominants dans la communauté des spécialistes du temps, de
l'aspect et de la modalité ; trop souvent, ces généralisations et ces
construits ont été en effet élaborés à partir d'un petit nombre de langues bien
décrites.
En plus de cette session thématique, Chronos 2009 comprendra aussi un workshop
consacré à la relation entre structure scalaire et structure événementielle
(co–organisé par l'Université Paris 7 et the University of Chicago) : ce
domaine empirique particulier s'est avéré très fécond au cours des dernières
années, puisqu'il a produit une moisson importantes de travaux théoriques et
formels. Le workshop associé à Chronos 2009 sera une occasion unique de
rassembler et de confronter les différentes approches du calcul aspectuel ainsi
nées.
Ces deux thèmes n'ont toutefois pas de caractère obligatoire ; toute proposition
portant sur le temps, l'aspect ou la modalité sera la bienvenue.
Modalités d'envoi des résumés :
Les communications présentées dureront 20 minutes (avec 10 minutes de
discussion), et seront données en français ou en anglais.
Priorité sera accordée aux communications originales, i.e. non présentées à
d'autres conférences importantes.
Les résumés envoyés devront être anonymes, rédigés en français ou en anglais, et
ne pas excéder deux pages de longueur (police Times New Roman 12 points) ; seul
le format PDF sera accepté. Les polices de caractère non-standards devront être
incorporées dans les documents PDF envoyés.
Un maximum d'un résumé par auteur seul et d'un résumé en collaboration sera
accepté.
