Announcement: Linguistics in the Pub November 2012

Topic: Urban Fieldwork

Language documentation has traditionally gone hand-in-hand with fieldwork
in distant locations, but in recent years there has been a growing interest
in the possibilities for this sort of research in large urban centres that
teem with linguistic diversity. Cities such as New York, London, and, of
course, Melbourne offer many opportunities for working with speakers of
under-described languages, but approaches towards urban language
documentation need to be carefully considered. This LIP session focuses on
how urban fieldwork with diaspora groups differs from the traditional model
of linguistic fieldwork, the particular challenges and also possible
advantages of urban fieldwork, and ways in which our methods and goals can,
and should, be adapted in this setting. The discussion will be led by Rosey
Billington who is documenting the Southern Sudanese language Lopit with the
diaspora community in Melbourne.

LIP is an occasional gathering of language activists and linguists in
Melbourne. All are welcome. Those in other parts of Australia and the
world who can't make it to the Melbourne LIPs are encouraged to
organise a local gathering to discuss this topic and support language
activities in your area.
