Translation in language documentation and revitalisation*

Translation in language documentation and revitalisation

All researchers engaged in linguistic fieldwork have to deal with issues of
translation in the course of their work. For some, it is of explicit and
direct concern, for example, in the case of lexicographical work or
producing educational materials. But issues of translation are also
relevant in grammatical description. In this month’s LIP, we will discuss
some of the issues translation brings to linguistics fieldwork, including,
but not limited to:

· Where semantics meets culture.

· Idiomaticity vs ‘faithfulness’.

· How to best elicit translations from informants.

· Accounting for disparities in grammatical categories between the
source and target languages.
