On behalf of Margaret Carew and Stanley Djalarra Rankin:

A community of Djinang people living at Maningrida in the Northern
Territory is looking for a linguist to continue work on their language.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, linguist Anita Berghout built on the
earlier work of Bruce Waters to develop a Djinang dictionary and learner's
guide as part of the Maningrida Dictionary Project. For reasons beyond
Berghout's control the dictionary could not be completed and published, but
the foundational materials have been archived and are waiting for further
development.

Djinang man Stanley Djalarra Rankin is keen to see the dictionary and other
resources completed and made available within his community. This proposal
has support from the Batchelor Institute Desert Peoples Centre Campus
under the NT Language Centre Support program.

Although a Djinang grammar is already available the project would work
particularly well for someone wanting to do corpus-building as part of a
doctorate.

For Rankin, the community priorities are to:

   - record Djinang stories and knowledge
   - finish the dictionary
   - create learning and teaching resources

If you would like to consider undertaking this project as part of a PhD
with the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Dynamics of Language, please
contact both Margaret Carew at Batchelor Institute (
margaret.carew at batchelor.edu.au) and Jane Simpson (jane.simpson at anu.edu.au).
General details on PhD applications can be found at our Vacancies

(Of course interested individuals do not necessarily need to be PhD
candidates, nor do they have to be associated with the Centre of
Excellence! )
