*Plants Animals Words: Mapping a day in the Square*

Linguists involved in the documentation of lesser-known languages recognize
that much of the data they collect is devoted to the description of the
speakers’ knowledge of the natural world. Ethnobiologists, who are
concerned with the relationships a community has with its plants and
animals, recognize that language is key to a deeper understanding of
traditional knowledge. With the aim of promoting interdisciplinary
research, the Linguistics department of the School of Oriental and African
Studies is hosting Plants, Animals, Words – Mapping a day in the Square!

Join us for a hands-on one day workshop where you will learn how to:

   - make good quality audio recordings (Tom Castle)
   - collect botanic samples (Niki Lawrence, Herbal Medicine, University of
   Westminster)
   - create a map recording the location of your collection (Lauren Gawne,
   SOAS)

This event is open to all and offers an excellent opportunity for
participants to gain hands-on experience in data-gathering techniques, and
share cross-disciplinary perspectives.
