* Announcement: Linguistics in the Pub in London (LIPIL)** Tuesday 8th
December 2015** - *
All communities celebrate with ceremonies, be they for major life events
such as births, weddings, deaths, or for religious, cultural or social
events. For language documentation projects in communities these events can
offer unique perspectives on language and culture. There are, however,
particular challenges to documenting and participating in these events,
both practical and ethical. We discuss how best to navigate these
challenges in a variety of contexts.
We will also spend some time at the end of the evening discussing topics
and directions for LIPIL events in 2016. LIPIL topics to date have focused
on language documentation, but can relate to any area of linguistics. All
ideas welcome!
LIPIL is an occasional gathering of language activists and linguists in
London and serves as an informal forum for the discussion of languages,
linguistics and related issues. We meet roughly once a month and discuss a
selected theme or issue. LIPIL is coordinated by Lauren Gawne (SOAS,
University of London) and is open to everyone who is interested. A summary
of the discussion is posted on the Endangered Languages and Cultures blog
<http://www.paradisec.org.au/blog/>. You can also Tweet on the night with
the #LIPIL <https://twitter.com/search?q=%23LIPIL&src=typd> hashtag.
