SOUTHEAST ASIA SPECIALIST LIBRARIAN III or LIBRARIAN IV
PUBLIC SERVICES
ASIA COLLECTION
UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII AT MANOA LIBRARY

Full-time, tenure track, general funds, available July 2000

Closing Date:    April 28, 2000

RESPONSIBILITIES:  Under the direction of the Head, Asia Collection,
provide general and specialized reference service including evening and
weekend hours, collection development and management for Southeast Asia
collections excluding the Philippines, instruction services in classroom
and group settings, active liaison with faculty and research
consultation
for faculty and students in Southeast Asia. Participate in library-wide
committees, task forces and program planning.  Professional development
and service in keeping with university and library standards for
retention, tenure, and promotion are expected.

The Southeast Asia Specialist Librarian selects materials in all formats
in Western and Southeast Asian languages relating to Southeast Asia,
determines priorities for processing and collection maintenance,
develops
and maintains effective working relationships with vendors, libraries,
and
research institutions throughout the world, initiates and sustains
appropriate arrangements for obtaining materials through grants,
donations, and exchange programs, works closely with acquisitions and
cataloging staff to facilitate the processing of materials received
through the Cooperative Acquisition Program for Southeast Asia, and
works
with the Preservation Librarian to maintain quality collections.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
At rank of Librarian III: ALA accredited MLS or international
equivalent,
at least three years of experience related to Southeast Asian studies in
a
research library environment, and twenty-four post-baccalaureate credits
in an Asian studies field.
At rank of Librarian IV: ALA accredited MLS or international equivalent,
at least seven years of experience related to Southeast Asian studies in
a
research library environment, and a second master's degree in an Asian
studies field.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
* Knowledge of resources and contemporary research issues in Southeast
Asian studies.
* Ability to provide research library reference assistance in general,
Asian and Southeast Asian studies.
* Proficiency in a Southeast language, preferably Indonesian, Thai, or
Vietnamese.
* Ability to perform collection development and management for Southeast
Asian collections.
* Ability to determine priorities for processing and collection
maintenance.
* Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with
faculty, students, vendors, libraries, and research institutions
throughout the world.
* Ability to initiate and sustain appropriate arrangements for obtaining
materials through grants, donations, and exchange programs.
* Ability to work closely with acquisitions and cataloging staff to
facilitate the processing of materials received through the Cooperative
Acquisition Program for Southeast Asia.
* Knowledge of preservation issues for Southeast Asian collections.
* Knowledge or ability in classroom library instruction theory and
practice.
* Experience in using electronic information resources including CD-ROM,
online catalogs, online services, locally mounted systems, and Internet
based information resources.
* Knowledge of current technological developments in Asian studies
resources.
* Experience in microcomputer use including email, word processing,
document creation, designing and maintaining web pages.
* Excellent oral and written communication skills.
* Evidence of ability to work in a collaborative, collegial
organizational
structure, including negotiation and persuasion skills.
* Evidence of ability to work independently and follow through on work
assignments.
* Ability and desire to participate in professional development
activities
at the local, regional and national level.

SALARY RANGE:   Librarian III:  $38,964 - $57,672
                Librarian IV:   $47,400 - $70,164

BENEFITS:  Include vacation and sick leave accumulated at 14 hours per
month each, 13 paid holidays, choice of group medical insurance and
state
retirement benefits which are vested after 10 years of service.
Librarians
are appointed to Library Services as a unit of the University.
Librarians
are represented by a faculty-wide, exclusive bargaining agent,
the University of Hawaii  Professional Assembly.

THE LIBRARY: The University of Hawaii Library has a staff of 137 full
time
employees and a collection of three million volumes.  It is a member of
ARL and RLG.  It uses OCLC and RLIN as bibliographic resources and has
begun a migration from CARL automated software to Endeavor for all
public
catalog and processing functions.

THE UNIVERSITY: The University of Hawaii at Manoa is the major research
campus of the University of Hawaii system. It is a land, sea, and space
grant institution with an enrollment of 17,000 students. Doctorates are
granted in 52 fields.
