*Assistant Professor - Southeast Asian Literature and Culture*

The Department of Asian Languages and Literatures, University of
Washington, Seattle, invites applications for an Assistant Professor with a
teaching and research emphasis on modern Southeast Asian literature and
culture, beginning Autumn 2021.   This is a tenure-track, full-time
appointment (9-month service period), with a 5-course teaching load.

University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and
service.  The scholar will conduct research in one or more languages of
Southeast Asia, with a focus on modern literature, or visual or popular
cultures with a strong textual component.

The University of Washington teaches Burmese, Indonesian, Khmer,
Tagalog/Filipino, Vietnamese, and Thai. The candidate will join a vibrant
campus community of students and scholars of Southeast Asia. In addition,
Seattle and Washington state are home to large Southeast Asian immigrant
and heritage communities.

The candidate will have demonstrated experience with, or commitment to,
engaging with these diverse groups. The successful applicant will
build connections within the department and across campus, and attract
students to our vital and growing Southeast Asia program and community. The
applicant will direct the Southeast Asia program within the department, and
work collaboratively with relevant groups in the department, university,
and community.

*Qualifications*
Applicants must have a Ph.D. or foreign equivalent by the start of the
appointment, with a specialization in Southeast Asian language, literature,
history, or culture, in one of the following fields: Art History, Area
Studies, Cinema/Media Studies, Communications, Comparative Literature,
Ethnic Studies, Gender Studies, Literature, History, Philosophy, Religion,
Sociocultural Anthropology, or Visual studies.
