Dear Colleagues

With apologies for multiple postings, please note and feel free to pass
along the below PhD scholarship opportunity at the University of Sydney,
which is notably available to non-AU nationals (a rare case).
Thanks
Mark

Documentation and description of an Eastern Himalayan Indigenous language

A unique opportunity has arisen for an outstanding PhD student to conduct
pioneering research on a previously undescribed (or insufficiently
described) Indigenous language of the Eastern Himalayan region (northeast
India and/or adjoining areas of Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Tibet).
The expectation is that this project's focal language would be one from a
lesser-studied branch of the Trans-Himalayan language family (a.k.a.
Tibeto-Burman), however other possibilities could also be considered.

The successful applicant will hold a scholarship at the University of
Sydney Department of Linguistics, a renowned centre for research on
Indigenous languages of mainland Asia from a functional-typological
perspective. The project also involves substantial field research, and the
successful candidate is expected to spend a considerable portion of their
candidature period in the field. This scholarship comprises a tuition
waiver plus a competitive stipend (please follow the links below for
details). Field equipment will be provided. Funds for travel and
maintenance during fieldwork are also expected to be provided.

This scholarship is not restricted by citizenship/nationality; candidates
who are not residents of Australia are welcome to apply. However,
preference may be given to qualified candidates who are themselves native
speakers of an Eastern Himalayan language and/or Indigenous to the project
region.
