I have always been told that the odd number of flowers is what one brings to
frineds, hostesses, etc.

In the new edition of Genevra Gerhart's The Russian's World she reiterates this
fact on page 16:

        Give, or place in a vase, only an odd number of flowers;
        an even number symbolizes death and is the proper
        number for graves.
