An even number of flowers is for mourning (or implying that
you wish the person were dead) not only in Russia, but also
in other parts of Europe (I don't know if it applies to all
of Europe). I made the mistake more than once of bringing a
dozen flowers to my hostesses at dinners in Bulgaria before
being clued in. There are also various other restrictions:
apparently in Germany bringing red roses says that you are
in love with the hostess. White is the color of death in
some countries, and you don't bring white flowers in those
          countries.
