Trans-Siberian Railway

I just got a message from a former student teaching in Japan
who wants advice about the safety of the Trans-Siberian Express.
Does anyone have any experience with its current safety for a
gringo? He wanted advice, but all that I could give him were
the old Wild East stories. Any advice would be appreciated.
