I do not know about safety for a gringo but the Solzhenitsyns were robbed
there when they were returning to Moscow few years ago. It was a scandal.
I do not think that anything improved there in this respect.  However, I
am sure that you can find those who managed to avoid unpleasant
encounters. Good luck.
