First publication of Gorky's MOTHER?

I have a very hazy recollection that Gorky's novel MOTHER was first
published in the U.S. in THE ATLANTIC MONTHLY or HARPERs, i.e. prior to
its Russian-language publication.

Can some kind soul tell me if this is true or not and, if so, provide
bibliographic details?
