Dear friends:

For those of you who have a broadband connection to the Internet (DSL,
Cable, Wireless), may I highly recommend the daily news reports of Vesti
on RTR (http://www.ptp.ru). Please note that the transliterated address
is "...ptp..." and NOT "...rtr..." The audio/video quality of the
broadcast is excellent and the production values of the news program are
first-rate.

RTR's Live Programming ("Priamaia translatsiia"") at the very top of the
home page (left) appears to be dead. So, don't bother. The treasure
trove is elsewhere and consists of taped video clips.

To view RTR's daily news programs, please follow the instructions below:

1) Click on "Novosti Dnia" or "Vse Novosti"

2).Click on "Arkhiv novostei" in the column to the right. This will
bring up a dialogue box asking for a range of dates. Just click on "Naiti".

3) This brings up yesterdays's news stories. Since it usually takes a
day or so for the taped clips to be put online, you will notice that
none of the stories on this column have any video icons next to them.

4) Go to the bottom of the page. Here you will see a numbered list of
page links beginning with 1 and ending with 15. Click on page 2. Now
scroll down till you see the first video icon.

That's it. Click on the video icon and it will launch Windows Media
Player. You'll find tons of news stories from all over the world. One
thing: The delivery style is rapid-fire Russian and it's not for the
faint of heart. On the other hand, the news items are all very topical.
Very challenging for all of us non-natives but well worth it.

Yours,

Benjamin
