As for question 1:

3rd day--Resurrection of Christ
9th day-- appearance of Christ to His Apostles and Doubting Thomas
40th day--Ascension of Christ

As for 2:
Never heard anything like that from the Russians I have been associating
with. I have been on several 40th birthdays in Russia. It has always been a
"iubilei" and a great occasion to drink.
