Cf. Lithuanian ilgas 'long' -- *ilga [re:ka] -> *vilga -> *vulga (regular
backing of front jer) -> volga, i.e. an ancient borrowing from a baltic
language?  The changes are identical to the conversion of prep. *in -> v
