It is with great regret that I announce the passing of Sir Dimitri
Obolensky, who died at the age of eighty-three on 23rd December 2001.  He
had been in increasingly poor health for the last few months.  Sir Dimitri
was one of the most eminent Byzantinists and Slavists of his generation;
among other achievements too well-known to need enumerating, his conception
of the "Byzantine Commonwealth" has had a profound influence on both
Byzantine and Slavonic studies, and there can be few mediaevalists who are
not in some way indebted to his contribution.  Sir Dimitri's funeral took
place at Oxford on January 3rd; there will be a memorial service at a later
