Dear SEELANGers,

Does anyone happen to know the source of the following saying
(apparently)? (One of my colleagues found a number of references to
it on the internet.) I'm curious because it is one of the few
Russian statements that Varlam, the principal villain in
"Repentance," makes during the course of this film. He uses it in
response to Sandro's protest that he, as an artist, does not have the
power to "enlighten" an entire people.

Thanks,
Ken Brostrom
