Dear Nicole,

You may want to consult Marcia Morris' interesting study "The
Ascetic Hero in Russian Literature" for reference texts/permutations
of the genre in the nineteeth and twentieth centuries. There must
also be books on socialist realism that take up the adaptation of
hagiographic conventions. Sounds like a good course!
