[SEELANGs] Why is Pechorin going to Persia?

When Pechorin meets up with Maksim Maksimych and the Author on the
Georgian military highway, we are told he is on his way to Persia.

Does anybody have any guesses as to why a twenty-four year old officer
(who had previously been in trouble with the authorities) would be heading
to the kingdom of the Shah?

(I mean, other than so that he can get killed off on his way back and
have his journal published.)
