Special Course is a standard term for Selected Topics in a particular
field which might have no relation to Major at all. This term was
commonly used in many Soviet "institutes" and universities, and, could be
used, sometimes, in some special secondary schools as well. Standard usage
would include "Spetskurs po ..." meaning "Selected Topics in ..."
If no field is indicated, it means that it is in Major.

No, it is not student teaching. This is just introductory apprenticeship.
It is quite similar to co-op system in US but mandatory rather than
optional. Different schools of higher education had different number of
"praktikum" or "proizvodstvennaya praktika" required, and sometimes in
several fields (e.g., for medical students). "Uchebno-oznakomitel'naya"
means that it might go not far beyond a guided tour, more or less. It is
designed just to expose the students to a particular field of work
(shadowing is an example). This is in theory. Implementation was another
story.

I translated transcripts from this specific Institute, and I am quite
familiar with its curriculum.
