DIRECTOR, C.V. STARR-MIDDLEBURY SCHOOL IN RUSSIA

Middlebury College seeks an energetic and innovative person to serve as Director of the C.V. Starr-Middlebury School in Russia, with a central office in Moscow. Currently, the School in Russia operates both undergraduate and graduate programs that emphasize student immersion and independence at three sites, the Russian State University of the Humanities (RGGU) in Moscow, Irkutsk State University, and Yaroslavl State University (undergraduate only), and employs 4 U.S. and Russian staff members in the three cities, in addition to the Director. The Director works closely with the Office of Off-Campus Study, the Russian Department, the Russian School, and the Faculty Advisory Board and reports, ultimately, to the Dean of Language Schools and Schools Abroad. The preferred starting date would be July 1, 2006. Contracts run for a three-year period with possibility for renewal, based on performance.

Candidates should have a Ph.D. (or equivalent) in the field of Russian language, linguistics, literature, or culture (or a related field), native or near-native language competency in both Russian and English, and experience in working with students and administration in both cultures. Computer literacy essential. Candidates with relevant teaching experience, knowledge of language pedagogy, and a demonstrated interest in second-language acquisition in the U.S. and Russia, as well as strong interpersonal skills and leadership ability, will receive the strongest consideration. The successful candidate will spend the academic year in residence in Moscow and will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the program. In addition to regular site visits, the director also attends meetings of Middlebury's directors' abroad, one of which is held on the Middlebury campus in July (while the Language Schools are in session), and during which the director conducts student interviews and orientations and meets with faculty and staff. There may be opportunities to teach in the summer Russian School in Middlebury.

Please submit a résumé and three references by December 1, 2005 to Michael Geisler, Dean of Language Schools and Schools Abroad, Middlebury College, Middlebury VT, 05753, USA. Preliminary meetings may be scheduled for the AAASS meeting in Salt Lake City in early November and/or at the ATSEEL/MLA meeting in Washington, DC, in late December. Finalists will be brought to campus in early 2006. Middlebury College is an Equal Opportunity Employer and encourages applications from women and members of minorities.
