Just a quick note to alert SEELANGS subscribers to the publication of
_Dictatorship of the Air: Aviation Culture and the Fate of Modern Russia_
released this month by Cambridge University Press.

The first book to explain the real story behind twentieth-century Russia’s
quest for aviation preeminence, _Dictatorship of the Air_ describes how,
behind a façade of daredevil pilots, record setting flights, and gargantuan
airplanes, longstanding legacies of industrial backwardness, cultural
xenophobia, and state-directed modernization prolonged Russia’s dependence
upon Western technology and, ultimately, ensured the USSR’s collapse.

Based upon more than a decade of research, but written with general readers
in mind, the book incorporates an extensive array of newly uncovered
archival materials and rare visual sources, many of which have never before
been published.
