My advanced students are reading "Nos" right now,
where to their great glee, they found Ivan
Jakovlevich having to choose between:
" ... Ì ·ÛÛ ÔËÚ¸ ÍÓÙËÈ, - ÒÍýÁýÎ àýÌ üÍÓÎÂË, -
ý ÏÂÒÚÓ ÚÓÓ ÓÂÚÒþ ÏÌ ÒÂÒÚ¸ ÓþÂÓ Î·ý Ò ÎÛÍÓÏ.
to which his esteemed wife thinks in reply:
ÓÒÚýÌÂÚÒþ ÍÓÙË Î˯Ìþþ ÔÓËþ"
Another version, the Russian on-line version, says:
- ëÂÓÌþ þ, èýÒÍÓ¸þ éÒËÔÓÌý, Ì ·ÛÛ ÔËÚ¸ ÍÓÙË, - ÒÍýÁýÎ àýÌ
üÍÓÎÂË, - ý ÏÂÒÚÓ ÚÓÓ ÓÂÚÒþ ÏÌ ÒÂÒÚ¸ ÓþÂÓ Î·ý Ò ÎÛÍÓÏ.
(íÓ ÂÒÚ¸ àýÌ üÍÓÎÂË ÓÚÂÎ · Ë ÚÓÓ Ë ÛÓÓ, ÌÓ ÁÌýÎ, ÚÓ ·ÎÓ
ÒÓ¯ÂÌÌÓ ÌÂÓÁÏÓÊÌÓ Ú·ÓýÚ¸ Û ÂÂÈ ýÁÓÏ, Ë·Ó èýÒÍÓ¸þ éÒËÔÓÌý
ÓÂ̸ Ì ηËÎý ÚýÍË ÔËÓÚÂÈ.) "èÛÒÚ¸ ÛýÍ ÂÒÚ Î·; ÏÌ Ê ÎÛ¯Â, -
ÔÓÛÏýÎý ÔÓ Ò·þ ÒÛÔÛý, -ÓÒÚýÌÂÚÒþ ÍÓÙË Î˯Ìþþ ÔÓËþ"
Translit.: "ne budu pit' kofij / kofiju" and
"ostanetsia kofiju lishnjaja porcija"
Now granted, this is Gogol writing the
idiosyncratic speech of his narrator, y-e-a-r-s
ago, but that masculine form suddenly made it all
make sense, why they were told to say "krepkij
kofe" or "chërnyj kofe" all those semesters ago.
