Dear SEELANGers,

In addition to the examples provided earlier, I would like to point
out to the turbulent history of Peter the Great's monument in Moscow,
although one might argue whether this artifact might be seen as a
great work of art or not...

There were several attempts to destroy (explode) Tsereteli's Peter the
Great's monument in Moscow including the attempt undertaken in 1997
by some post-Soviet revolutionary minded terrorists. See a few reports
about
it:http://www.svobodanews.ru/articlete.aspx?exactdate=20060831214818533;
http://www.gazeta.ru/2001/04/26/last19384.shtml
There was a strong opposition to the erection of this monument in
Moscow in 1997.

All best,
Alexandra
