The Turgenev story is probably Stuchit' from Sportsman's Sketches,
where the driver Filofej hears the noise of a cart accompanied by the
ringing of bells, and in fear of robbers whips up their troika. The
closing in of the cart behind them continues a long time, and through
fog is all the more unsettling. They are later overtaken, but
instead of being robbed or killed as Filofej fears, one of the men
asks for some money to celebrate a wedding.
